Headingley Methodist Church – If these stones could talk.. ….what stories they would tell about the people who built and worshipped in the church and how Headingley has changed over time. Enjoy our 180th anniversary; explore the church, hear our stories; view photos of local shops and share your memories.
We’d love you to visit our church on Saturday, September 13th from 10:00-13:00 to explore the building with its original pews, gallery and pulpit, fine organ and ‘church mice’. No booking required. We have a brilliant new children’s trail – The Great Architect Mouse Hunt, supported by a Leeds Civic Trust grant, and our volunteers will be on hand for information.
This year it is 180 years since James Simpson, the noted prolific Methodist architect, designed the church. It is a great survivor of his work, still actively used by church members and the local community. There is a display about Simpson and the local people who built the church.
Our church members are currently involved in an oral history project – ‘Living Stones’ – to record their own experiences of church. This Heritage Open Day is the first opportunity to listen to extracts and meet some of the people who have told their stories. We have an illustrated audio trail around the church for you to follow.
In the church café, our volunteers will serve delicious home-made refreshments and drinks on a Pay As You Feel basis from 10:00 to 12:30.
Please come in either through the church garden from Otley Road up the front steps to the main church door or via our accessible entrance at the middle door on Chapel Street.
Two Dance Classes coming soon to Headingley Methodist Church:

180th Anniversary of Headingley Methodist Church’s Opening
‘Songs of Praise’ Hymn Singing
On July 19th 2025 at 2.30 pm, Richard, Irene and the choir will be celebrating 180 years of Headingley Methodist Church in the way they know best – by hosting a Songs of Praise style hymn singing festival in the church. Aled Jones can’t be with us unfortunately, but the multi-talented church choir, our wonderful organist Irene and our less-than-wonderful choir leader Richard will be there to lead the singing.
If you have a favourite hymn that you would like to be included, please fill in a contact form or hand your request to Richard at a service. The only stipulation is that the hymn must be in Hymns and Psalms!
People across the circuit and worshippers at other churches around Headingley have been invited to take part, but only HMC attendees can choose their favourite hymns!
There will be refreshments after the singing so lost voices can be recovered!
